Nervous Dogs

A slower, more thoughtful grooming option for dogs who need extra support, extra patience, and a calmer introduction to the grooming process. This follows a similar shape to our intro groom, but with even more focus on helping your dog feel safe, supported, and able to cope at their own pace.

The part you dont always see..

Trying to stay grounded, soft, and unreadably calm while your dog cycles through every possible feeling in under five minutes.

Calm starts before the groom

For nervous dogs, the grooming experience starts well before the appointment itself. Dogs are very good at reading energy, so arriving calm, grounded, and trusting that your dog will be in safe hands can make a real difference. When the humans around them are tense, rushed, or worried, dogs often feel that too.

Our philosophy is that calm energy matters. A groomer working with nervous dogs needs to bring patience, steadiness, and a settled presence to every step of the process. If a groom takes longer, it is often because we are intentionally slowing things down and taking regular breaks to keep the dog calm and to keep our own energy calm too. That extra time is not wasted time. It is often the reason the groom stays manageable.

Patience is needed all the way through, from arriving to drop-off to pick-up. For that reason, we recommend heading home and relaxing after drop-off rather than waiting outside. Waiting nearby can sometimes keep everyone in a heightened state. Please wait for a text before coming back for pick-up.

Dogs remember the whole experience, not just the groom itself. That includes the lead-up, the handover, the time spent here, and the energy around pick-up. Even after the groom is finished, it helps to keep things calm, speak softly, breathe deeply, and let your dog come down from the experience gently.

What we actually do

When your dog comes in for a nervous dog appointment, we begin by giving them time to settle in and take in the environment before expecting anything from them. The goal is not to rush straight into grooming, but to help your dog feel safe enough to start building trust with the space, the process, and us.

We move through the appointment slowly and adjust the pace to suit the dog in front of us. Depending on what your dog is comfortable with, that may include settling time, handling, brushing, bathing, drying, tidy-up work, nails, or simply getting used to being here. Some dogs may do quite a lot in one visit, while others may need shorter, simpler sessions at first.

We do our best to offer a more fear-free style of appointment by using a calmer pace, extra breaks, and thoughtful handling. We also have crates and segregated areas available for dogs who need more space, more privacy, or less stimulation during their visit.

If your dog would do best on a quieter day with no other dogs around, please let us know when booking. We will always do our best to accommodate that where possible. However, we do want to be honest that we cannot always control everything that happens during the day, and there can be overlaps in grooming appointments.

Before pick-up, we focus on ending the appointment as calmly and positively as possible, even if the biggest success that day was simply helping your dog feel safer and more settled than last time.

Why we do what we do

Nervous dogs often need a very different approach to grooming. Slowing the process down, reducing pressure, and allowing more time can make a huge difference to how they cope, how much trust they build, and how they feel about coming back.

We want our space to become familiar, predictable, and easier for them over time. A calmer appointment can help create better memories, reduce stress, and make future grooming more manageable for both the dog and the owner.

Optional add-ons available

Add-ons may be discussed where appropriate, but for nervous dog appointments the main focus is usually keeping the experience calm, positive, and manageable for the dog.

Who is this for?

This service is ideal for nervous dogs, dogs who are sensitive to handling or noise, dogs who have had difficult grooming experiences in the past, and dogs who need a gentler, slower-paced appointment.

Recommended breeds

This service can suit any breed or mix. It is based more on temperament, past experience, and confidence level than coat type alone.

Good to know

We recommend allowing extra time before and after this kind of appointment. More time usually adds more value here, because it gives your dog space to settle, process the experience, and leave on a calmer note. The goal is not always to complete everything in one visit. Sometimes the most important part of the appointment is simply helping your dog feel safe enough to keep building confidence.
